5 Easy steps for a mental detox

A lot has been said about the benefits of conducting a body detox in order to rid it of all toxins and bad bacteria. However, not much advocacy has been done in the mental health and wellness arena in terms of ridding the mind of toxins. Mental toxins, as determined by the great philosopher, Napoleon Hill come in through the 5 God-given senses that we use to

determine the environment we live in. In the same way, there should be five different steps to be taken in order to rid the mind of the toxins.

Step 1 'Stand guard at the gate of your mind' These are the words that Napoleon Hill used to emphasize the need to be aware of what we take into our minds and the effects that each piece of information will have, after having entered the mental system. This is the first step to take when embarking on a mental detox journey. Think about the information you receive each day. As you receive the information,it goes straight into your mind and forms part of the toxins over there. Now think about where that information comes from and how you consume it. From the moment you wake up in the morning, what is it that you see, hear, smell, taste, and sense. Are you starting your day with reading the newspapers? Well, that means you get to start your day with a bombardment of news about bombings, muggings, terror attacks and such bad news. Avoid them! Find something good to do, read or listen to everyday, fist thing in the morning.

Step 2. Choose your friends wisely. You are the sum of the 5 closest people to you. Come to think about it, we discuss matters of great importance to us with the people closest to us. If you are constantly in the company of nay-sayers and negative thinkers, that means you are constantly taking in mental toxins through your ears! What ever poisons comes out of their mouths, it goes into your mind and muddies it. To clear such toxins and avoid further toxification of the mind through company, think long and hard about the people that you spend most of your time with. What do you mostly discuss with them? Do you discuss how bad the current political, economical, socio-economical or even weather disasters are? If so, that is the kind of fertilizers going into your mind. The best way to detox is to cut them off completely. Chose a set of new friends and companions. Chose to surround yourself with people who will nourish your mind, heart and soul.

Step 3 Work on your mindset. We all become what we think about, no matter what!. If you are mostly thinking about good things, then that means you are filling your mind with good things. The same goes for bad things. Remember the law of nature does not allow for a vacuum, ever. If you are not filling your mind with good thoughts, the bad thoughts will automatically creep in. The bad thoughts become toxins to your mind. They keep you from seeing the good in the world or expecting to see anything good. The bad thoughts in your mind do not only become toxins on your mind, but to your body as well. Have you noticed that the people who are always speaking and thinking negatively, are often not of good health? Yep, its the unexpected link between good thoughts and good health.

Step 4. Let go of bad past experiences. If you have ever had any bad experience in the past or some kind of trauma, that sits in your mind and becomes poison. That poison has to be squeezed out in order to make space for good vibrations. We all have different experiences in this life journey. We all see the good and the bad. We have different degrees and variations of the bad that we have experienced. What ever experience you go through, it can either go two ways; good or bad. The only difference is the degree to which it affects you afterwards. There are certain experiences that leaves you with a bad taste in your mind, that you need to talk them out with someone you trust, who can help you just by listening. Then there are those terrible terribles, we all dread and do not wish for, even to our worst enemies. For those cases, such as trauma, violence and abuse, it may not be sufficient to talk to a friend. What you need will be a professional who is highly trained to handle such mental toxins. They do not change what happened. They only help you process it, so that it does not sit in your mind as a toxin and you are able to live on!.

Step 5 Set deliberate intentions of good thoughts. Yep, there is such a thing as having an appointment to think. It is like having an appointment to go to the spa. You set time aside just to think. To think only good thoughts. You can even encourage the flow of such good thoughts by being in an environment that allows for such good vibrations to flow through you. Find a peaceful, beautiful place to sit at and just take in the beauty and splendor of the place. Be sure that there are no disturbing noises around. You can even bring your own music with. In fact, you do not have to leave your home at all. You can find a quiet hour where you will sit in a clean room without any disturbances at all. Play that soft music that gets your beautiful thoughts flowing and start floating! This process is well explained by Ester Hicks as one of those processes which empties the mind and fills it with good thoughts, even for hours after leaving the appointment spot.
